- I currently protect and
license with HASP 4. What will I need to do to move to Sentinel HASP?
In general, moving to Sentinel HASP from HASP4 requires introduction of the newer-generation
HASP HL keys where hardware-based protection and licensing is required. Aladdin
recognizes that the move to Sentinel HASP will result from varied business considerations,
so different vendors are likely to plan their migration from HASP4 at varying rates.

Migration Guide to assist you in your move
from HASP4 to Sentinel HASP. This guide outlines a three-step migration
process that is easily adaptable to the rate of migration most appropriate for your
operations. To assist you in moving to HASP HL keys, we also provide a liberal replacement
policy for the HASP4 keys you have installed in the field.
In moving to Sentinel HASP, you will not only benefit from a more flexible solution designed
to meet the needs of today's software vendors. You will also gain significant value
in the increased level of protection – both against piracy and in securing your

- What will happen with
my HASP keys already in the field or in inventory?
HASP HL keys in the field are ready to support Sentinel HASP. You don't need to replace
HASP HL keys. HASP HL keys in the field will require a firmware upgrade that provides
more memory and a significantly higher level of protection. Sentinel HASP includes a
simple upgrade utility that you can bundle with your software to effect the firmware
upgrade.
HASP4 keys will need to be replaced with newer-generation HASP HL keys. You can
replace HASP4 keys at the pace best suited to your business needs and logistics.
- What makes Sentinel HASP different
from previous HASP products?

Sentinel HASP?
First of all, Sentinel HASP features the highest level of software-based protection available.
Sentinel HASP software-based protection keys incorporate the security features of our
HASP HL hardware key. Sentinel HASP also allows you to incorporate hardware-based protection
at a later date without the involvement of your development staff or major changes
to your products.

- I currently use HASP
HL, which answers my protection and licensing needs. If I am not interested in software-based
protection and licensing at this time, why should I move to Sentinel HASP?
Even if you have no current interest in software-based protection and licensing,
Sentinel HASP delivers significant enhancement to Aladdin's HASP HL hardware-based protection
keys. There are four major reasons for upgrading to Sentinel HASP: enhanced protection,
increased memory capacity, trialware support and improved software tools.
With Sentinel HASP, each HASP HL key now provides a Secure Communication Channel. This
significantly enhances the protection of your software by securing all communication
between the protected application and the HASP HL protection key. By using a random
key for every call between the protected application and HASP HL key, Sentinel HASP effectively
strengthens its protection of the channel to prevent such threats as driver emulation,
record/playback and brute force attacks.
In addition, Sentinel HASP firmware includes important anti-hacking elements by placing
critical logic into the HASP HL hardware itself. Aladdin's LicenseOnChip™
technology ensures that all licensing logic is executed on the hardware key itself.
UpdateOnChip™ does the same for authentication of updates. With the release

So by moving to Sentinel HASP, you effectively double your available, on-key read/write

The new secure ROM enables you to safely use the HASP HL key to retrieve information
at runtime, based on data that cannot be tampered with in the field. This allows
you to use secure proprietary information – such as version numbers, customer names,
etc. when implementing protection and licensing for your products.
With Sentinel HASP, it is not necessary to specify the key type when wrapping with the
Envelope, as in previous versions. This means that you can use the same tool to
generate trialware, while continuing to protect your licensed products with the
HASP HL key as you do today.
By opting for Sentinel HASP, you also gain access to an improved Envelope. The new tool
wraps each feature/module with a different encryption key (from 64,000 available
keys) to enhance protection. Sentinel HASP will also provide tools for tracking, reporting
and data mining that are not available with previous HASP HL versions.
Sentinel HASP also includes an Admin Control Center tool that gives your customers useful
administration and control capbilities. In addition, you can use product key activation
with your HASP HL keys in the field to greatly simplify upgrades and license extensions
for your enterprise customers.
